The Hymne russe varié, op 27, op. 27 (1838), is the most elaborate piece of the present selection. It was composed shortly before the two piano quintets, op. 30 and 31. The first Nocturne Louise Farrenc's op. 49, was probably composed in the 1850's. With this piece, with its elegant simplicity of expression, the composer pays her tribute to the musical form created by the Irish composer John Field (1782-1837). The 'Variations brillantes sur un thème d'Aristide Farrenc, op. 2, (Introduzione date from 1824 at the latest. This was the first piece of hers to be published. It inaugurates an abundant production in this form so appreciated in the 19th century.

Most of Agathe Backer-Grøndahl's compositions are piano pieces and songs. Her only pieces with orchestra are early works and remained in manuscript. Her style is very much influenced, like the style of Louise Farrenc, by the music of the great German composers. The selection presented here includes pieces published in 1881, like the Concert Study, op. 11, no. 1, to I Skumringen (At Twilight), op. 66, no. 5 included in the Six Fantasy Pieces published in 1905. Agathe Backer-Grøndahl excelled in miniature pieces with evocative titles, in the tradition of Robert Schumann. This form represents, along with many Concert Studies, most of her piano production. Some of her most popular pieces, the Humoreske , op. 15, no. 3, Sérénade, op. 15, no. 1 and the Sommervise, (Summer Song), op. 45, no. 3, are present in this recording.
