After studying at the Marseille Conservatory Maurice Guis has been very soon interested in historical instruments, especially for the traditional instrument of the Provence, the "galoubet" (pipe), and for the hurdy gurdy. He is the founder of the groups " Les Musiciens de Provence" (Music of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance) and "Le concert Champêtre" (pastoral baroque music). Since 1989 he is directing the "Académie du Tambourin", an orchestral group of pipe-tabor players. He is also performing as a soloist, particularly with the organist Chantal de Zeeuw. Together with Remi Venture and Thierry Lefrançois he is the author of an important monographic work, "Le galoubet-tambourin, instrument traditionnel de Provence" (ed. Edisud).
